Life drawings

So I managed to get back to life drawing recently. I finally feel like I'm falling into a groove in terms of what tools to use and how to get the most out of the sessions I attend. Sometimes I have to adjust my routine based on how I'm feeling- for example, this week I wasn't feeling like committing to a finished drawing, so I tried inking some of my sketches.

I really enjoy Pitt Artist pens for sketching, especially gestures. For a long time I was struggling with the best way to go about gesture drawings, and what to use, and I finally found that a brush pen is the way to go- for me, anyway. Pitt Artist pens are great because they have nice tips, don't fray too badly, hold up well under lots of use (so long as one is gentle with them), and are inexpensive. They are pretty easily found at any art supply store too.

I still really struggle with gestures in terms of proportion, but I do feel like I've gotten a lot better at capturing the idea and feel of the pose. I realized that committing to one or two lines instead of sketching with the brush pen makes the drawing a lot clearer.

These are just a few drawings from the session, I didn't feel they were all worth posting.

I always love models that go for the action poses. Last semester there was a guy who went all out, every pose he did was fantastic and must have been crazy hard for him to hold. I know not all models do that, or can do that, but it's pretty satisfying when they do. It's when models go for the generic poses that I start to get bored. Hands on hips or hands clasped in front of or behind the torso during a static pose with the feet splayed and staring straight ahead are not some of my favorite poses. I'm also not a fan of reclining poses, but, I'll do them when I have to.

I saw How to Train Your Dragon last week with my Mom and I adored every minute of it (it helped that there were only two other people in the theater). The art book is a must buy as soon as I'm able to get my hands on it. I want the action figures and the plushes too, but they can only be found at Wal-mart. I think the really amazing thing about the movie is how well they were able to translate the character designers' traditional drawings into gorgeous 3-dimensional character models and actually retained the intended look. The pacing and story were fantastic too, there was never a dull moment throughout. Best animated movie I've seen in a while. I didn't see Monsters Vs. Aliens but I loved Kung Fu Panda a whole lot. Dreamworks doesn't deserve the bashing it often gets; as much as it turns out sequels, it also turns out great original stuff. They can put out as many sequels as they like as far as I'm concerned, as long as they keep the original films coming too.

Secondly, a teeny clip from a bit of an 11 Second Club audio piece I was working on for practice. Been working on this on and off forever. In total it's about 8-9 seconds long. It's actually completed but the second half still needs a lot of tweaking.

And last, some cat pictures. Zoey is incredibly hard to photograph. She always moves when I'm trying to get a picture of her, especially when she's doing something cute. I finally managed to get a couple I liked. Look at those cute little paws!

Also it's very hot already for May.

Went to the museum and drew some stuff from one of my favorite parts, the African/ Oceanic art wing. I love these masks, they're so expressive. Done with a Copic Multiliner SP in my smaller travel sketchbook, this image is two pages put together.

Digital painting WIP, advice?

Once again, it's been awhile!

A little digital painting I was working on today. This whole thing is very tricky.

It's not exactly finished, but I guess I'm at a loss in how to make it look less flat. Any advice/ crits? Lighting and depth are not my fortés. I partially referenced it from a photo. I kind of like some of the texture I got on the larger tree trunks, but it still looks flat and I feel like there's not enough variation in color.

Help is appreciated, of course.

Some Gargoyles fanart.

I've been watching a lot of Gargoyles lately (I'd really forgotten how cool the show was) and I've had a bit of an art block so I decided to make a fan character. Her name is Verrazano, or Razzy for short. It's basically garg-Mitsu. I have an idea for a story for her but I'm not sure how I would go about drawing it/ putting it in comic form and I'm intimidated by the idea of doing a story that would require keeping the established characters and events cannon. Plus it's not terribly interesting and I am terrible at writing plots. Oh, and also, since I wasn't really using reference other than having the show on while I drew it, I added an extra finger by accident.

Hello there! This blog is going to serve as a place to post my work, particularly unfinished things/ sketches/ works in progress. I do have a livejournal, but I felt that this was a better place to strictly post work.

First I have some doodles done recently that were inspired by Bruce Timm. I've been very into his stuff recently for various reasons, but mostly because I love the way he simplifies the human form. These were quick drawings in Photoshop using his works as reference. I wasn't trying to copy his drawings exactly, just capture the gestures in them.

This drawing was done last night in between commissions and looking for work. I just had a random need to draw and this came out. I don't consider myself to be particularly good at drawing dragons, but this was an attempt. I was also trying to draw something less cutesy than usual.

That's all for now. I apologize for linking back to deviantART, it's a real hassle for me to upload everthing to my hosting space and I try to only do that if I'm updating my website. I may switch over to using my hosting space for these images in the future, but at the moment it'd basically be like uploading something two or three times to all my galleries.
